Question 1

Which Skoda Scala engine is best to buy used?

Accepted Answer

The 1.0 TSI suits most driving and is the commonest, so it is the easiest to find and resell. The 1.5 TSI is more relaxed on the motorway, while the 1.6 TDI only makes sense for high annual mileage.

Question 2

Which DGT label does a Skoda Scala carry?

Accepted Answer

Petrol versions and the Euro 6 diesel get the C label. The G-TEC natural gas version gets the ECO label, which eases access to low-emission zones and, in some cities, brings parking advantages.

Question 3

Is the DSG gearbox on a Scala reliable?

Accepted Answer

The seven-speed dry-clutch DSG can judder or hesitate at low speed as the clutches wear. On a test drive, creep forward as in traffic and reverse up a slope, and ask whether the gearbox software or clutch has been attended to.

Question 4

Is the Skoda Scala big enough for a family?

Accepted Answer

Rear legroom and the boot are generous for a compact hatchback, which is the Scala's main argument. For more headroom or a higher driving position, the Kamiq SUV shares its mechanics.
