Question 1

Is the Octavia a hatchback or a saloon?

Accepted Answer

It looks like a saloon but is a liftback: the whole tailgate opens with the rear window, which makes the boot easy to load. The Combi is the estate version, with a longer, squarer load area.

Question 2

How can I tell an Octavia that was a taxi?

Accepted Answer

A very high mileage for its age and a company or self-employed driver among previous owners are the usual signs. The DGT vehicle report lists every previous owner.

Question 3

Which Octavia versions get the ECO label?

Accepted Answer

The G-TEC, which runs on compressed natural gas as well as petrol, and the e-TEC mild hybrid qualify for ECO. The iV plug-in hybrid gets ECO or CERO depending on its electric range, while ordinary TSI and TDI versions carry C or B by Euro standard.

Question 4

Is the Octavia mechanically the same as a Golf?

Accepted Answer

Since the third generation it sits on the same Volkswagen group platform and shares most engines and gearboxes, including the DSG. Parts and know-how are therefore easy to find, and the same checks apply, such as testing the DSG from cold.
