Question 1

Who pays tax when buying a used car privately in Sevilla?

Accepted Answer

The buyer pays ITP (Impuesto de Transmisiones Patrimoniales) to the Junta de Andalucía. It is charged on the higher of the price paid and the official valuation for that model and age. A purchase from a dealer carries no ITP.

Question 2

How is ownership of a car bought in Sevilla transferred?

Accepted Answer

The change of owner is registered with the DGT, and the buyer must apply for it within 30 days of the sale, with proof that ITP has been paid. The seller should also notify the DGT of the sale so that fines and taxes stop reaching them.

Question 3

What does the Sevilla heat do to a used car?

Accepted Answer

Long summers in full sun age paint, dashboards, rubber seals and tyres faster, and strain the air conditioning, the cooling system and the battery. Check that the air conditioning blows truly cold and look for cracking on the seals and tyre sidewalls.

Question 4

Does the DGT environmental label matter in Sevilla?

Accepted Answer

Spanish law requires municipalities of over 50,000 inhabitants, Sevilla among them, to set up low-emission zones, so the label decides where a car may be driven. It depends on the fuel and registration date and is held in the DGT records.

Question 5

How often does a car in Sevilla need the ITV?

Accepted Answer

A private car has its first ITV at four years old, then one every two years until it is ten, and every year after that. Make sure the inspection is valid when you buy, because without it the car cannot be driven.
