Question 1

What kind of automatic gearbox does a SEAT have?

Accepted Answer

Almost all recent automatic SEATs use the Volkswagen group's DSG dual-clutch gearbox, with six or seven speeds depending on the engine. The small Mii offered only a simpler automated manual, which shifts more slowly.

Question 2

Does a SEAT DSG gearbox need servicing?

Accepted Answer

The wet-clutch DSG fitted to the more powerful engines needs its oil and filter changed at the intervals SEAT sets, and skipping them shortens its life. The seven-speed dry-clutch version has no scheduled oil change, and its mechatronic unit is the part to watch.

Question 3

Which automatic SEATs get the ECO or zero label?

Accepted Answer

The León and other models with an eTSI mild-hybrid engine, sold only with DSG, carry the DGT ECO label. The e-Hybrid plug-in versions of the León and Tarraco get the zero label, which brings advantages in low-emission zones and an IVTM discount in some municipalities.

Question 4

What should I check on a test drive of an automatic SEAT?

Accepted Answer

Pull away gently several times, including in reverse: a healthy DSG engages smoothly without shudder or a clunk. Warning lights, a flashing gear indicator or a gearbox stuck in one gear point to a fault that should be diagnosed before you buy.
