Question 1

How is a used car transferred in Salamanca?

Accepted Answer

The change of ownership goes through the DGT, at the Jefatura Provincial de Tráfico in Salamanca or online, once the ITP has been paid. The car also needs a valid ITV.

Question 2

Who collects the ITP on a used car bought privately in Salamanca?

Accepted Answer

The transfer tax is managed by the Junta de Castilla y León, which sets its rate, and is worked out on the higher of the price and Hacienda's official value. A dealer sale includes VAT instead and pays no ITP.

Question 3

Does the DGT label matter in Salamanca?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Spanish towns of more than 50,000 inhabitants must set up low-emission zones, and Salamanca is one of them, so the label decides where a car may enter. Check it by number plate on the DGT website before buying.

Question 4

Can I buy a car in Salamanca and register it in Portugal?

Accepted Answer

Yes, and the border is close, but once the car is imported into Portugal it pays the ISV there, based on engine size and emissions, plus the IUC every year. Work out that cost before agreeing a price.

Question 5

What should I prepare for winter driving around Salamanca?

Accepted Answer

Mountain roads in the Sierra de Béjar and the Sierra de Francia can be snowy in winter, and the DGT may then require chains or winter tyres. Four-wheel drive or a set of all-season tyres helps if you live or travel there often.
