Question 1

Does sea air affect cars from Pontevedra and the Rías Baixas?

Accepted Answer

Salt-laden air and constant humidity speed up corrosion, above all on cars parked outdoors near the sea. Look at the sills, wheel arches, brake discs and lines and the exhaust, and check the electrical connectors in the engine bay for green oxide.

Question 2

Do Vigo and Pontevedra have low-emission zones?

Accepted Answer

Both cities have more than 50,000 inhabitants, so Spanish law requires them to set one up. The DGT label on the windscreen decides access, so check a car's label against each council's current rules before buying one with no label or a B label.

Question 3

How is a car bought in Pontevedra transferred?

Accepted Answer

The change of ownership is filed with the DGT online, at a traffic office or through a gestoría, with the signed contract and, in a private sale, proof that ITP has been paid to Galicia's tax agency. The seller should also notify the DGT of the sale.

Question 4

Is it worth testing a Pontevedra car on one of Vigo's hills?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Steep streets wear clutches and brakes and test automatic gearboxes, so a short climb tells you more than a flat test drive. Feel for slipping and judder and notice any burning smell when pulling away uphill.
