Is a manual Peugeot 308 more reliable than the automatic?

Generally yes, especially in the first generation, whose four-speed AL4 automatic is known for faults. The manual's main wear item is the clutch, so check it bites cleanly without slipping.

What should you check on a manual Peugeot 308 1.2 PureTech?

Ask when the timing belt was last changed: it runs in oil and can break down, shedding debris into the oil system. Check oil consumption too, a known weakness of early units.

Who handles the transfer of a used Peugeot 308 in Spain?

The transfer is registered with the DGT, usually by the buyer or the dealer. On a private sale the buyer also pays ITP to the region; a dealer sale carries IVA instead.
