Which MINI Cooper automatic gearbox is best to buy used?

The six-speed torque-converter automatic in the R56 and F56 is the simplest to live with. The seven-speed dual-clutch fitted from 2018 shifts faster but should pull away smoothly in slow manoeuvres.

Is a MINI Cooper with a CVT gearbox worth buying?

The R50 MINI Cooper's CVT has a history of failures, and repairs rarely make sense on a car of that age. If you consider one, ask for proof of gearbox servicing and test it fully warm.

What should I check at the DGT before buying a MINI Cooper automatic?

Request a DGT vehicle report to confirm there are no liens or unpaid fines, and check that the ITV is current. A private sale also pays ITP, which a dealer sale does not.
