Question 1

Which Mini Cooper generation should I look for?

Accepted Answer

Cars from 2014 onwards (F56 and later) use BMW's own engines and are generally less troublesome than the 2006 to 2013 R56, whose petrol engines often needed timing chain work. On an R56, ask whether the chain and tensioner have been replaced.

Question 2

Is the electric Mini Cooper a good used buy?

Accepted Answer

It carries the DGT zero-emissions label, which gives unrestricted access to low-emission zones, and suits city use. Its range is modest, so check that it covers your daily driving and ask for a battery health report.

Question 3

What is the difference between Cooper, Cooper S and John Cooper Works?

Accepted Answer

They are steps in power: the Cooper is the everyday version, the Cooper S has a stronger turbo petrol engine and the John Cooper Works is the most powerful. More power usually means dearer insurance and more wear on tyres and brakes.

Question 4

What should I check on a Mini Cooper Cabrio?

Accepted Answer

Open and close the soft top several times, look for damp in the cabin and check the seals. The Spanish sun ages the fabric, so a faded or cracked roof is a bargaining point.
