Which DGT label does a used petrol Mercedes get?

A Euro 4 or later petrol Mercedes, generally registered from 2006, gets the C label. Euro 3 cars get the B label, and EQ Boost versions with a mild-hybrid system may carry the ECO label.

What problems does the Mercedes 1.8 M271 engine have?

Early versions of the 1.8 M271, fitted to the C-Class and E-Class in the 2000s, became known for timing-chain wear. A metallic rattle on a cold start means the chain or its tensioner needs attention.

Is a petrol Mercedes a good choice for city driving in Spain?

For short trips, yes: a petrol Mercedes avoids the particulate-filter trouble of a diesel that never warms up. With a C label, it enters low-emission zones on the same terms as a Euro 6 diesel.
