Question 1

Which DGT label does a used Mazda 3 get?

Accepted Answer

Fourth-generation cars with the mild hybrid system carry the ECO label. Earlier petrol versions are usually C, and diesels get C only when they meet Euro 6; older diesels are B.

Question 2

What is the Skyactiv-X engine in the Mazda 3?

Accepted Answer

A Mazda petrol engine that, in some conditions, runs on spark-controlled compression ignition to save fuel, with mild hybrid assistance. It is less common than the Skyactiv-G, so check that it was serviced by a workshop that knows it.

Question 3

Is a diesel Mazda 3 a good idea?

Accepted Answer

It makes sense for long motorway distances. In mainly city use the particulate filter struggles to regenerate, which can dilute the oil, so check the level on the dipstick and ask how the car was driven.

Question 4

Is rear visibility an issue on the latest Mazda 3?

Accepted Answer

The fourth-generation hatchback has a wide rear pillar that limits the view over your shoulder. A test drive with a few parking manoeuvres quickly shows whether it suits you.
