Question 1

What should I check on a car that has lived in Lugo?

Accepted Answer

Humidity and winter grit on the mountain roads attack the underside, so check brake lines, exhaust, subframes and sills, and lift the boot floor for damp. A car used on farm tracks also deserves a look at its suspension and tyres.

Question 2

Where does a buyer in Lugo pay ITP?

Accepted Answer

ITP on a private sale goes to the autonomous community where the buyer lives, which for a Lugo resident means Galicia's tax agency, ATRIGA. It must be paid before the DGT will record the change of ownership. A dealer sale carries VAT and no ITP.

Question 3

Does the DGT label matter in Lugo?

Accepted Answer

Spanish law requires towns of more than 50,000 inhabitants to set up a low-emission zone, and Lugo city is one of them. Check the car's label and the council's current rules if you will drive into the centre; on rural roads the label makes no difference.

Question 4

Does an old Lugo (LU) number plate need changing?

Accepted Answer

No. Plates issued before 2000 carried a province code such as LU, and they stay valid for the car's whole life. Since then plates have been national, so a car registered anywhere in Spain needs no new plate when it moves to Lugo.
