Question 1

Who collects ITP on a used car bought in León?

Accepted Answer

In a private sale the buyer pays ITP to the autonomous community where they live, so a León resident pays the Junta de Castilla y León at its own rate and valuation tables. A car bought from a dealer is invoiced with VAT and owes no ITP.

Question 2

Do León and Ponferrada have low-emission zones?

Accepted Answer

Spanish law requires towns of more than 50,000 inhabitants to set up a low-emission zone, and both León and Ponferrada are above that size. Each council sets its own rules and timetable, so check the car's DGT label against the local ordinance.

Question 3

What should I check on a car that has spent winters in León?

Accepted Answer

Look for rust on the underbody, brake lines and wheel arches, where road salt collects, and check the tyres and battery, which the cold wears hard. A car used in the mountains may also have harder-worked brakes and clutch.

Question 4

Is four-wheel drive worth having in León?

Accepted Answer

On the plain around León city and in El Bierzo, front-wheel drive with good winter or all-season tyres is enough for most drivers. In the mountain areas of the north, where snow lies longer, a four-wheel-drive car or SUV is a sensible choice.
