Question 1

What should I check on a classic Defender?

Accepted Answer

Inspect the chassis, rear crossmember and bulkhead for corrosion, and look at oil leaks, which are common but should be modest. Many have been modified, so make sure any lift kit, winch or larger tyres appear on the ITV ficha técnica.

Question 2

Is a Defender registered as a car or a commercial vehicle?

Accepted Answer

Both exist: some versions, especially hard tops and pick-ups, are registered as commercial vehicles. The category changes how often the ITV is due and how the car is insured, so check the papers before buying.

Question 3

Which DGT label does a Defender carry?

Accepted Answer

Classic diesels have the B label or none, which can stop them entering low-emission zones. The new Defender's mild hybrid diesels carry the ECO label, and the P400e plug-in hybrid gets the zero label.

Question 4

How can I tell if a Defender has been used hard off-road?

Accepted Answer

Look underneath for dented sills, scraped differentials and damaged underbody protection, and ask about wading. On the new Defender, check that the air suspension raises and lowers evenly.
