Question 1

Which automatic gearbox does each Jeep use?

Accepted Answer

Diesel 4x4 Renegades and Compasses, like the Cherokee, used a nine-speed automatic, while petrol and e-Hybrid versions use dual-clutch gearboxes. The Wrangler and Grand Cherokee have an eight-speed torque-converter automatic, and the electric Avenger makes do with a single-speed drive.

Question 2

What should I know about a Jeep Renegade or Compass 4xe?

Accepted Answer

The 4xe is a plug-in hybrid: a petrol engine drives the front wheels and an electric motor the rear, giving four-wheel drive. It carries the DGT zero label; check that the charging cable is included and that the car runs on electricity alone during the test drive.

Question 3

Is an automatic Jeep Wrangler suited to off-road use?

Accepted Answer

Yes, it is built for it, but a car that has been off road needs a look underneath for damaged skid plates, rust and leaks. In Spain, lift kits and larger tyres must be approved at the ITV as a modification and shown on the papers.

Question 4

Does the Jeep nine-speed automatic need special attention?

Accepted Answer

It was criticised for hesitant, jerky shifts at low speed, partly improved by software updates. On a test drive, check for smooth changes in town traffic and ask whether the updates were applied.
