Question 1

Who collects the transfer tax on a used car bought in Girona?

Accepted Answer

In a private sale the buyer pays ITP to the Agència Tributària de Catalunya within the set deadline, and the DGT then records the change of ownership. A purchase from a dealer carries no ITP.

Question 2

Does Girona have a low-emission zone?

Accepted Answer

Spanish law requires towns of more than 50,000 people to set up low-emission zones, and the city of Girona is covered by that rule. The DGT environmental label on a car decides whether it may enter, so check it before buying.

Question 3

Is it worth buying a car across the border in France instead of in Girona?

Accepted Answer

It can be, but a car registered in France must pass an ITV and pay the Spanish registration tax before the DGT issues local plates. Add those costs to the price before comparing it with a car already registered in Spain.

Question 4

What should I look for on a car from the Girona Pyrenees?

Accepted Answer

Mountain cars often run on winter tyres or chains and sometimes have four-wheel drive, which is worth testing. Salt spread on mountain roads in winter can also cause corrosion underneath.
