Question 1

How does the Cantabrian coast affect a used car?

Accepted Answer

Humid, salty air off the Bay of Biscay speeds up corrosion on the underbody, exhaust and brake lines. A car kept in a garage in Santander usually fares better than one parked outdoors on the seafront for years.

Question 2

Is four-wheel drive worth it in Cantabria?

Accepted Answer

On the coast and the A-8 and A-67 motorways it is not needed. It helps in Campoo, Liébana and on the mountain passes, where snow is common in winter; good winter or all-season tyres cover most drivers.

Question 3

What taxes apply to a private purchase in Cantabria?

Accepted Answer

The buyer pays ITP to the Government of Cantabria within the deadline it sets, and the DGT then registers the transfer. Each year the car pays IVTM to the council where it is registered.

Question 4

Does Santander, in Cantabria, have a low-emission zone?

Accepted Answer

Spanish law requires municipalities of over 50,000 inhabitants, Santander among them, to establish a low-emission zone where the DGT label decides access. Check the label of an older diesel before buying it for daily city use.
