Question 1

Which automatic gearbox does a used BMW have?

Accepted Answer

Most rear- and all-wheel-drive models from the early 2010s on use the ZF eight-speed Steptronic. Front-wheel-drive models such as the newer 1 Series, the 2 Series Active Tourer and the X1 use different gearboxes, including a seven-speed dual-clutch on some versions.

Question 2

Does a BMW automatic need its fluid changed?

Accepted Answer

BMW describes the fluid as filled for life, but many independent specialists recommend changing it, particularly on high-mileage cars. Ask whether it has been done and expect smooth, prompt shifts on the test drive.

Question 3

Can I drive an automatic BMW with any B licence?

Accepted Answer

Yes. A B licence obtained in a manual car covers automatics too, but one obtained in an automatic carries code 78 and is limited to automatic cars.

Question 4

Are hybrid and electric BMWs automatics?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Plug-in hybrids such as the 330e use the Steptronic automatic, and electric models like the i3, i4 or iX have a single-speed transmission. Electric BMWs carry the DGT 0 label, and so do plug-in hybrids with at least 40 km of electric range.
