Question 1

What do sDrive and xDrive mean on a BMW X1?

Accepted Answer

xDrive is BMW's all-wheel drive; sDrive drives two wheels only. On the first generation sDrive means rear-wheel drive, and from the second generation, launched in 2015, it means front-wheel drive.

Question 2

Should I worry about the timing chain on a used BMW X1?

Accepted Answer

The N47 diesel in first-generation X1s is known for timing-chain wear, heard as a rattle from the gearbox end of the engine. Ask whether the chain has been replaced, and have any rattle at idle inspected before buying.

Question 3

Which DGT label can a used BMW X1 get?

Accepted Answer

The electric iX1 and the plug-in hybrid versions qualify for the Cero label. Most petrol and diesel X1s carry C, and the mild-hybrid versions of the current generation carry ECO.

Question 4

What should I check on a plug-in hybrid BMW X1?

Accepted Answer

Charge it fully if you can and compare the electric range shown with what the car offered when new; a large shortfall points to a tired battery. The high-voltage battery has its own warranty, so ask whether it still applies.
