Question 1

What is the N47 timing-chain problem on the BMW 3 Series?

Accepted Answer

The 2.0-litre N47 diesel fitted to many 318d and 320d models until about 2015 can wear its timing chain, which sits at the back of the engine and is costly to replace. Listen for a rattle at idle and ask whether the chain has been renewed.

Question 2

Which 3 Series can drive freely in Madrid?

Accepted Answer

Madrid's low-emission rules restrict cars without a DGT label, and the city centre limits B and C cars further. A 330e plug-in hybrid carries ECO or 0, depending on its electric range, and faces the fewest limits.

Question 3

Is an ex-renting 3 Series a good buy?

Accepted Answer

Cars returned from renting contracts are usually a few years old, serviced at the dealer and sold with a known history. Their mileage tends to be high, so check tyres, brakes and the gearbox rather than assuming little wear.

Question 4

Is buying a BMW 3 Series privately in Madrid cheaper than from a dealer?

Accepted Answer

A private sale pays ITP to the Comunidad de Madrid, which a dealer sale does not, though a dealer usually adds a warranty. The change of owner is registered with the DGT in both cases.
