Which petrol engine is best in a used BMW 2 Series?

The B48 2.0 four-cylinder in the 220i and 230i balances performance and economy and has a good record. The 218i's 1.5 three-cylinder suits town use, and the six-cylinder M240i is the enthusiast's choice.

Are there problems with the BMW 2 Series N20 engine?

The N20 2.0 used in early 220i Coupés up to around 2016 is known for timing-chain guide wear, heard as a rattle on start-up. Look for a chain replacement in the service history or choose a later B48 car.

Is the BMW M235i a good used buy?

The rear-drive M235i Coupé of 2014 to 2016 uses a 3.0 six-cylinder, while the later M235i xDrive Gran Coupé uses a 2.0 four-cylinder with all-wheel drive. They are different cars, so check which one an advert means.
