Question 1

Can any car drive inside Barcelona's low-emission zone?

Accepted Answer

No. The Rondes zone bars cars without a DGT environmental label on weekdays between 7:00 and 20:00, which mainly affects older petrol and diesel cars. You can check a car's label by its number plate on the DGT website before buying.

Question 2

Where is the ITP paid when buying a used car privately in Barcelona?

Accepted Answer

In Catalonia the ITP is managed by the Agència Tributària de Catalunya, and the buyer pays it before the transfer is recorded at the DGT. A purchase from a dealer includes VAT instead, so no ITP is due.

Question 3

Which cars suit driving in Barcelona?

Accepted Answer

Compact cars are easier to park in the city's busy streets and tight underground car parks, and hybrids and electric cars carry the ECO and CERO labels. If you cannot charge at home, check the public charging points near where you live.

Question 4

Who sets the road tax for a car registered in Barcelona?

Accepted Answer

The IVTM, the annual road tax, is set by the Ajuntament de Barcelona and depends mainly on the car's fiscal horsepower. Other municipalities in the metropolitan area set their own rates.
