Question 1

Where is ownership of a car transferred in Badajoz?

Accepted Answer

The change of ownership is filed with the DGT, online, at the Jefatura Provincial de Tráfico in Badajoz or through a gestoría. When you buy from a dealer, the dealer usually files it for you.

Question 2

How much ITP does a private sale pay in Badajoz and Extremadura?

Accepted Answer

The Junta de Extremadura sets the rate, applied to the value in the tax authority's official tables for the car's model and age, and the buyer pays it. A car bought from a dealer is invoiced with VAT and pays no ITP.

Question 3

Can someone living in Portugal buy a car in Badajoz?

Accepted Answer

Yes, but a Portuguese resident has to register the car in Portugal, which means paying ISV and passing an inspection there. Work out that cost before agreeing a price, as it can outweigh a lower price on the Spanish side.

Question 4

What does the Badajoz heat mean for a used car?

Accepted Answer

Check that the air conditioning blows cold within minutes, and look at the battery, tyres and rubber seals, which age faster in strong heat. Faded paint and cracked dashboards are common on cars kept outdoors.

Question 5

Do I need a DGT label in Badajoz?

Accepted Answer

Spanish law requires towns of more than 50,000 inhabitants to set up low-emission zones, and that includes Badajoz and Mérida. Wherever such a zone applies, the label decides access, so check it on any older car.
