Question 1

What is the difference between the S tronic, tiptronic and multitronic in an Audi?

Accepted Answer

S tronic is a dual-clutch gearbox with quick changes, tiptronic a conventional torque-converter automatic used on larger and more powerful models, and multitronic a continuously variable transmission fitted to front-wheel-drive A4, A5 and A6 models until the mid-2010s. All three let the driver change gear manually.

Question 2

What should I check on an Audi with an S tronic gearbox?

Accepted Answer

Pull away gently, forwards and in reverse, to feel for judder, and check that changes stay smooth once the gearbox is warm. Ask whether the gearbox oil has been changed at the intervals Audi specifies, as the wet-clutch versions need it.

Question 3

Is an Audi with a multitronic gearbox worth avoiding?

Accepted Answer

Not necessarily, but it has a reputation for costly repairs, particularly at high mileage. Warning signs are judder when pulling away, slipping or a gearbox warning on the dashboard, and a documented gearbox repair counts in its favour.

Question 4

Can I drive an automatic Audi on any Spanish licence?

Accepted Answer

Yes, a standard B licence covers automatic cars. A licence obtained in an automatic carries code 78 and is limited to automatics, but an unrestricted licence covers both.
