Question 1

Which Audi A4 engines need the most care?

Accepted Answer

TFSI petrol engines from the late 2000s are known for oil consumption, so ask how much oil the car uses between services. On TDI diesels the particulate filter suffers if the car only does short city journeys.

Question 2

Is the Audi A4's multitronic gearbox a risk?

Accepted Answer

The multitronic continuously variable automatic, fitted to front-wheel-drive A4s of earlier generations, has a reputation for costly repairs. Test it from a standstill and at low speed, and feel for juddering or slipping; quattro cars use other gearboxes.

Question 3

Which DGT label does a used Audi A4 get?

Accepted Answer

Petrol A4s that meet Euro 4 or later normally qualify for the C label, while a diesel needs Euro 6 for C and earlier ones get B. The label determines access to low-emission zones in Madrid, Barcelona and other large cities.

Question 4

Which Audi A4 should I choose: saloon, Avant or allroad?

Accepted Answer

The Avant adds a larger load area with little penalty in driving, and the allroad raises the ride height and always has quattro four-wheel drive. The saloon suits buyers who do not need the extra space.
