Question 1

What is the difference between the two Audi A1 generations?

Accepted Answer

The first generation, sold from 2010 to 2018, was offered with three or five doors and with diesel engines. The second, from 2018, is five-door only, petrol only and noticeably roomier inside, and adds the raised citycarver version.

Question 2

What should I check on a first-generation Audi A1?

Accepted Answer

The early 1.2 and 1.4 TFSI petrol engines had a record of timing chain wear, so listen for a rattle on a cold start and ask whether the chain has been replaced. On S tronic cars, check that the gearbox engages smoothly when pulling away.

Question 3

Which DGT label does a used Audi A1 get?

Accepted Answer

Every petrol A1 carries the C label, as do Euro 6 diesels. Earlier Euro 5 diesels from the first generation get the B label, which gives fewer rights of access to low-emission zones.

Question 4

Is an Audi A1 worth the premium over a Polo or an Ibiza?

Accepted Answer

The three share platforms and engines, so running costs are similar. What the A1 adds is a better-finished interior, more equipment and the Audi badge, so compare like-for-like versions before paying the difference.
