Question 1

What does the Costa Blanca sun do to a car in Alicante?

Accepted Answer

Years of strong sun fade paint, crack dashboards and dry out rubber seals and wiper blades, and the air conditioning works hard for much of the year. Check that it blows cold and look at the plastics and seals as closely as the bodywork.

Question 2

Can I buy a car on foreign plates in Alicante?

Accepted Answer

A car that will be kept in Spain must be registered here, which means an ITV inspection, Spain's registration tax and Spanish plates. Unless the seller has already done it, a foreign-plated car is a bigger job than an ordinary DGT transfer.

Question 3

Which taxes apply to a private sale in Alicante?

Accepted Answer

A private sale pays ITP to the Generalitat Valenciana, a tax that a dealer sale does not carry. Each year the car then pays IVTM to the council where it is registered.

Question 4

Do low-emission zones apply in Alicante?

Accepted Answer

Towns of over 50,000 inhabitants, such as Alicante, Elche, Benidorm and Torrevieja, are required by law to set up low-emission zones, where the DGT label decides access. Check the label of an older diesel before relying on it in town.
