Question 1

How does the Galician climate affect a used car in A Coruña?

Accepted Answer

Frequent rain and sea air near the coast speed up corrosion on the underbody, brake pipes and exhaust, and damp can get into the cabin through tired seals. Look under the car and lift the mats on any that have lived by the sea.

Question 2

Which taxes apply to a private sale in A Coruña?

Accepted Answer

The buyer pays ITP, a transfer tax managed by the Xunta de Galicia, which a dealer sale does not carry. Each year afterwards the car pays IVTM to the council where it is registered.

Question 3

Do low-emission zones matter in A Coruña?

Accepted Answer

Spanish law requires towns of over 50,000 inhabitants, which include A Coruña, Santiago de Compostela and Ferrol, to set up low-emission zones. The DGT label decides access, so check it on an older diesel.

Question 4

Is it worth buying a car outside A Coruña, elsewhere in Spain?

Accepted Answer

It widens the choice, and the change of owner through the DGT works the same anywhere in Spain. A car from the dry south or centre often has less corrosion, though the buyer still pays ITP in their own region.
