Question 1

Does an electric Volvo XC40 pay IUC in Portugal?

Accepted Answer

No. Fully electric cars are exempt from IUC in Portugal, so an electric XC40 pays no annual road tax. It still has to pass the periodic IPO inspection like any other car.

Question 2

What is the difference between the XC40 Recharge and the EX40?

Accepted Answer

EX40 is the name Volvo has given the fully electric XC40 since 2024; it is the same model line. Before that, Recharge was used both for the electric version and for the T4 and T5 plug-in hybrids, so check which powertrain a car actually has.

Question 3

Can an XC40 B3 or B4 be plugged in?

Accepted Answer

No. The B3 and B4 mild hybrids use a small 48-volt system to assist the combustion engine, but they cannot be charged from a socket or driven on electricity alone.

Question 4

What should I check on a used plug-in hybrid XC40?

Accepted Answer

Ask for the charging cable and see how far the car goes on electric power alone, as the range falls as the battery ages. An imported plug-in hybrid also pays ISV when it is registered in Portugal.
