Question 1

How does the XC40 compare with other compact premium SUVs?

Accepted Answer

It competes with the BMW X1, Audi Q3 and Mercedes-Benz GLA. The Volvo stands out for its upright, practical cabin and its safety equipment, while rivals tend to feel sportier on the road.

Question 2

Can a Volvo XC40 go off-road?

Accepted Answer

It handles dirt tracks and wet slopes well, especially with all-wheel drive, but it has no low-range gearbox and is not built for serious off-road driving. On most rural roads the tyres matter more than the drive layout.

Question 3

Is the XC40 big enough for a family?

Accepted Answer

Rear space suits two adults or child seats, and the boot has a usefully square shape, though families who need more room tend to move up to the XC60. The electric version adds a small storage compartment under the bonnet.

Question 4

Do electric XC40s pay road tax in Portugal?

Accepted Answer

No. Fully electric cars are exempt from IUC and, when imported, from ISV. Plug-in hybrids pay IUC on their petrol engine's displacement and CO2.
