Question 1

Does an SUV pay more in motorway tolls?

Accepted Answer

Tolls on Portuguese motorways are charged by class, set by the number of axles and the height measured over the front axle. From 1.10 metres there it is Class 2, although some passenger cars pay Class 1 with a Via Verde device. Ask the seller what the car pays.

Question 2

Do I need an all-wheel-drive SUV?

Accepted Answer

Many SUVs, especially compact ones, are sold with front-wheel drive only, which is enough for roads and easy tracks. If you tow, use unpaved rural roads or drive up the Serra da Estrela in snow, look for an all-wheel-drive version and ask how its coupling or transfer box has been serviced.

Question 3

How does an SUV's size affect IUC?

Accepted Answer

For cars registered from July 2007, IUC depends on engine size and CO2 emissions, so a large petrol or diesel SUV pays noticeably more than a small car, and diesels carry a surcharge. Hybrids declare less CO2, and an electric SUV pays no IUC.

Question 4

Is a seven-seat SUV a real seven-seater?

Accepted Answer

In many SUVs the third row suits children better than adults and leaves little boot space when in use. Sit in it yourself and fold the seats out and back before buying.
