Question 1

Does a car bought in Porto need re-registering elsewhere in Portugal?

Accepted Answer

No. Number plates are national and ownership is recorded at the Registo Automóvel, so a car bought in Porto only needs the ownership transfer, wherever you live.

Question 2

What should I check on a car that lived by the sea in Porto?

Accepted Answer

Salt air on the coast at Matosinhos or Gaia speeds up corrosion. Look at the underbody, the brake discs, the exhaust and the bottoms of the doors, and check the cabin for a damp smell.

Question 3

How do I know a private seller's car in Porto carries no finance?

Accepted Answer

Ask for a certificate from the Registo Automóvel, which shows any reserva de propriedade held by a finance company and other charges on the car. While that reservation stands, the car cannot be transferred cleanly until the lender releases it.

Question 4

Dealer or private sale in Porto?

Accepted Answer

Buying from a dealer as a consumer brings the legal guarantee and the paperwork handled for you. A private sale is often cheaper but sold as seen, so the inspection, the latest IPO report and the registry check fall on you.
