Question 1

What should I check on a used Nissan Leaf?

Accepted Answer

Ask for a battery state-of-health reading, since the Leaf's pack is air-cooled and loses capacity faster in hot weather and with frequent rapid charging. It also uses the CHAdeMO connector for fast charging, which fewer new chargers offer.

Question 2

Are Nissan CVT gearboxes reliable?

Accepted Answer

The Xtronic CVT fitted to many Qashqai and X-Trail automatics is sensitive to the condition of its fluid. Look for proof that the fluid has been changed, and be wary of shuddering or a whining noise on a test drive.

Question 3

How much IUC does a used Nissan pay?

Accepted Answer

For cars registered from July 2007 the IUC depends on engine size and CO2 emissions, so a small petrol Micra pays far less than a diesel X-Trail. A fully electric Leaf is exempt.

Question 4

Is a Nissan imported from another country worth buying?

Accepted Answer

It can be, but an imported car must pay ISV before it is registered in Portugal, and that tax weighs heavily on diesels. Check whether the price already includes ISV and Portuguese registration.
