Is every Smart fortwo automatic?

The first two fortwo generations have no clutch pedal: an automated manual changes gear for you. From 2014 the fortwo and forfour came with either a five-speed manual or the twinamic automatic, so check which one a car has.

What is the difference between the old Smart automated gearbox and twinamic?

The older gearbox uses a single clutch worked by an actuator, so each change brings a brief lull in pull. Twinamic has two clutches and pre-selects the next gear, which makes shifts quicker and smoother in traffic.

Are electric Smarts cheaper to run in Portugal?

Fully electric cars are exempt from IUC, and there is no gearbox or clutch to wear. They still go to the IPO like any other car.
