Question 1

Do I have to register a car bought in Santarém at a local office?

Accepted Answer

No. The change of owner goes to the Registo Automóvel, which is national, so it can be done at any registry office in Portugal or online. Dealers usually handle it as part of the sale.

Question 2

Is it worth looking in Lisbon as well as Santarém?

Accepted Answer

Often, yes. The A1 puts Lisbon about an hour away, which widens the choice considerably. A car bought there is registered and inspected exactly as one bought in Santarém.

Question 3

What should I check on a Santarém car that has worked in the countryside?

Accepted Answer

Look under the car for damage from dirt tracks, a worn towbar and tired suspension, and check the air filter for dust. Pickups and four-wheel-drive cars that worked on farms may have low mileage yet hard years behind them.

Question 4

Where is the IPO done in the Santarém district?

Accepted Answer

At any approved inspection centre; there are several across the district, and a certificate from any centre in Portugal is valid. Check the date of the next inspection on the paperwork before you buy, so it does not fall due straight away.
