Question 1

Why does an imported Porsche cost so much more in Portugal?

Accepted Answer

A car registered for the first time in Portugal pays ISV, calculated on engine size and CO2 emissions, and on a large petrol engine it stays high even with the reduction for a used car's age. When comparing an imported car, ask whether the price already includes ISV and Portuguese plates.

Question 2

Does the Porsche Taycan pay road tax?

Accepted Answer

No. Fully electric cars are exempt from both ISV and IUC in Portugal, which makes the gap between a Taycan and a petrol Porsche of similar price wider than it looks. Check the battery's state of health and how much of its manufacturer warranty remains.

Question 3

What is Porsche Approved?

Accepted Answer

It is Porsche's certified used programme, sold through official Porsche centres, with a detailed inspection and a warranty from the brand. It costs more than buying privately, but on a car whose repairs are expensive the warranty can be worth it.

Question 4

How can I tell if a Porsche has been used on track?

Accepted Answer

Look for heavily worn tyres and brake discs, heat marks on the brakes, circuit stickers or a harness bar, and ask about track days at Estoril directly. Track use is not a problem in itself if the servicing kept pace with it, but it should show in the records.

Question 5

Which older Porsche 911 and Boxster engines need checking?

Accepted Answer

The 996 generation 911, early 997s and the first Boxster and Cayman share engines known for intermediate shaft (IMS) bearing failures, and some suffer cylinder bore scoring. A specialist inspection, and proof of whether the bearing has been replaced, is worth having before buying one.
