Question 1

What should I check on an older Porsche 911 or Boxster?

Accepted Answer

On the 996, the early 997 and the Boxster and Cayman of the same generation, the intermediate shaft (IMS) bearing can fail and wreck the engine. Ask for proof it was upgraded and have a specialist read the over-rev record stored in the engine computer.

Question 2

How much IUC does a used Porsche pay in Portugal?

Accepted Answer

For cars registered since July 2007 the IUC depends on engine size and CO2 emissions, so a large-engined Cayenne or 911 sits near the top of the scale. Electric models such as the Taycan are exempt.

Question 3

Is an imported Porsche a good buy?

Accepted Answer

It can be, provided the ISV has been paid and the car wears Portuguese plates and is registered at the Registo Automóvel. If legalisation is still under way, the tax and paperwork belong in the price you agree.

Question 4

Do the diesel Porsches have particular issues?

Accepted Answer

The 3.0 V6 diesel in the Cayenne and Macan came from the Volkswagen Group and was covered by emissions-related recalls, so check the work is on record. Porsche dropped diesel engines in 2018, so every diesel is now a used car.
