Question 1

Petrol or diesel for a 308 in Porto?

Accepted Answer

A BlueHDi diesel makes sense for regular trips on the A1, A3 or A4, but short runs across the centre keep its particulate filter from cleaning itself. For mostly city driving the PureTech petrol fits better, provided its timing belt has been looked after.

Question 2

What wear should I expect from Porto's streets?

Accepted Answer

Steep climbs from the Ribeira and the setts across the old town wear the clutch, brake discs and suspension bushes faster than flat roads. Listen for knocks from the front end over cobbles and check that the clutch does not slip on a hill.

Question 3

Does sea air affect cars around Porto?

Accepted Answer

Cars parked outdoors along the coast at Foz, Matosinhos or Vila Nova de Gaia are exposed to salt, which attacks brake discs, the exhaust and underbody fixings. A look underneath on a lift is worth asking for before buying one.

Question 4

Does a car bought in Porto need new plates elsewhere in Portugal?

Accepted Answer

No: Portuguese number plates carry no regional code, and the change of ownership is registered at the Registo Automóvel, online or at any registry office. The car keeps its plates wherever the new owner lives.
