Question 1

What usually goes wrong on a used Land Rover?

Accepted Answer

Air suspension on the Range Rover, Range Rover Sport and Discovery can leak or lose its compressor, and electrical faults are a common complaint across the range. Some early 2.0 Ingenium diesels stretched their timing chain, so listen for rattle on a cold start.

Question 2

Why is the IUC so high on some Land Rovers?

Accepted Answer

For cars registered from July 2007, the IUC rises with engine size and CO2 emissions, so a 3.0 diesel or V8 Range Rover pays far more than an Evoque. A plug-in hybrid with low official CO2 pays noticeably less.

Question 3

Is an imported Land Rover a good deal?

Accepted Answer

Many used Land Rovers in Portugal come from elsewhere in Europe. A car still to be legalised must pay ISV, which is heavy on big engines, so make sure the price you agree is for a car already on Portuguese plates or includes that tax.

Question 4

Old or new Land Rover Defender?

Accepted Answer

The original Defender, built until 2016, is simple and loved off-road but rusts at the chassis and bulkhead, so inspect it from underneath. The Defender sold since 2020 is a modern monocoque SUV, mostly on air suspension, with far more electronics.
