Question 1

Are all Jeeps four-wheel drive?

Accepted Answer

No. Many Renegade, Compass and Avenger versions drive the front wheels only, while 4x4 versions and the 4xe plug-in hybrids use all four. The Wrangler is the model built for serious off-road use.

Question 2

What should I check on a Jeep that has been off-road?

Accepted Answer

Look underneath for dents and scrapes on the sump guard, sills and suspension arms, and for mud packed into the underbody. Raised suspension or larger tyres must appear on the registration documents, or the car can fail the IPO.

Question 3

How do the Jeep 4xe plug-in hybrids work?

Accepted Answer

In the Renegade and Compass 4xe, a petrol engine drives the front wheels and an electric motor the rear axle, giving four-wheel drive. They are economical when charged often; with a flat battery they use noticeably more fuel.

Question 4

Why is the IUC so high on some Jeeps?

Accepted Answer

For cars registered since July 2007 the IUC rises with engine size and CO2 emissions, so a Wrangler or Grand Cherokee with a large engine pays far more than a small Renegade. Check the amount before you commit.
