Question 1

Are winter tyres mandatory in the Vosges?

Accepted Answer

In the communes listed by the prefecture, yes: from 1 November to 31 March you need winter or 3PMSF-marked tyres, or snow chains or socks in the boot. The list covers much of the mountain area, so check it for where you live and drive.

Question 2

Is four-wheel drive worth it in the Vosges?

Accepted Answer

It helps on steep, snowy roads in the high valleys, but good winter tyres matter more than the drivetrain. A four-wheel drive costs more to buy and maintain, so weigh it against how often you drive above the valleys.

Question 3

How is the carte grise priced for a car bought in the Vosges?

Accepted Answer

It is the fiscal horsepower multiplied by the Grand Est region's rate, plus a few fixed fees. The ANTS online simulator gives the exact figure before you commit.

Question 4

What should I check on a car that has done Vosges winters?

Accepted Answer

Road salt attacks the sills, wheel arches, brake lines and exhaust, so look underneath with a torch. Ask how old the winter tyres are too: rubber hardens with time even when the tread looks fine.
