Question 1

Which automatic gearbox does a Volvo have?

Accepted Answer

Most larger Volvos use the eight-speed automatic the brand calls Geartronic, while some XC40 engines are paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch box. Fully electric models have a single-speed transmission with nothing to shift.

Question 2

What should I check on an automatic Volvo's gearbox?

Accepted Answer

Drive it from cold and watch for jerky or delayed shifts, especially between the lower gears. Ask too whether the gearbox fluid has ever been changed, and when.

Question 3

Which Crit'Air sticker does an automatic Volvo get?

Accepted Answer

It depends on the engine, not the gearbox: electric models get the green Crit'Air 0, petrol cars and plug-in hybrids Crit'Air 1, and Euro 6 diesels Crit'Air 2. The sticker decides access to low-emission zones in French cities.

Question 4

What matters on a Volvo Recharge plug-in hybrid?

Accepted Answer

Check that the charging cable comes with the car and that the battery still gives a useful electric range when fully charged. Charging at home needs a suitable socket or wallbox.
