Question 1

Is the Volvo XC60 Geartronic gearbox reliable?

Accepted Answer

The XC60's Geartronic is a robust torque-converter automatic, but Volvo describes it as filled for life. Many specialists still recommend changing the gearbox oil, which reduces the jerky shifts sometimes reported on the first generation's six-speed.

Question 2

Volvo XC60 diesel or plug-in hybrid: which to choose?

Accepted Answer

A D4 or D5 diesel XC60 suits high-mileage drivers but stays at Crit'Air 2. The T6 or T8 Recharge, rated Crit'Air 1, runs on electricity for short trips if charged often, and its battery deserves a check before buying.

Question 3

Which automatic Volvo XC60 models have four-wheel drive?

Accepted Answer

The XC60 D5, T6 and T8 always have AWD four-wheel drive, while the D4 came with either two or four driven wheels. These are the versions to favour for towing a caravan or driving in the mountains.

Question 4

What should I ask the seller of a used Volvo XC60 automatic?

Accepted Answer

For an XC60 over four years old, the seller must hand over a contrôle technique less than six months old and the certificat d'immatriculation, crossed out and signed. Also ask for gearbox oil invoices and, on a Recharge, the battery's condition.
