Question 1

How reliable is the Renault EDC gearbox?

Accepted Answer

The EDC dual-clutch gearbox generally works well, but it can judder or hesitate when pulling away and in stop-start traffic. On a test drive, creep away slowly, manoeuvre and listen for knocks on gear changes. Ask about software updates or a clutch replacement.

Question 2

Should I buy an older Renault with the four-speed automatic?

Accepted Answer

The DP0 automatic, fitted to Clio, Mégane and Scénic models of the 2000s, is known as fragile and costly to repair. Harsh shifts or a limp-home mode are clear warning signs. Without proof of a rebuild, be cautious.

Question 3

What is a Renault E-Tech hybrid like to drive?

Accepted Answer

Its multimode gearbox has no clutch, and the electric motor handles pulling away. The engine can therefore sound unusual under acceleration, which is normal. In town the car often runs on electricity alone.

Question 4

What does battery rental mean on a Renault Zoe?

Accepted Answer

Many Zoes were sold without their battery, which is rented monthly instead. As a buyer you either take over the rental contract or look for a car with an owned battery. Settle this before buying, as it changes the running costs considerably.
