Question 1

911 Cabriolet or Boxster?

Accepted Answer

The 911 Cabriolet carries its engine at the rear and has two small rear seats. The Boxster is a mid-engined two-seater with a luggage compartment at each end, and usually costs less to buy and run.

Question 2

What is the IMS bearing issue on a Porsche?

Accepted Answer

The M96 and M97 flat-six engines fitted to the Boxster and 911 until the late 2000s use an intermediate shaft bearing that can fail. Ask whether it has been replaced or upgraded, and keep the invoice with the car.

Question 3

How do I check the fabric roof on a Porsche convertible?

Accepted Answer

Operate it a few times and watch that it folds and latches in one smooth movement. Look for worn fabric at the folds, a cloudy or cracked rear window, and water marks inside, often caused by blocked drains.

Question 4

What does it cost to register an imported Porsche in France?

Accepted Answer

A used car brought from abroad can owe the CO2 malus at its first French registration, reduced with the car's age, on top of the carte grise fee charged per fiscal horsepower. On a powerful Porsche both add up, so work them out before agreeing a price.

Question 5

What is Porsche Approved?

Accepted Answer

It is Porsche's own used-car programme, sold through Porsche Centres with a warranty and an inspection. Cars from independent dealers or private sellers can cost less but come without it.
