Question 1

What does it take to register a car bought in Germany or Luxembourg in Moselle?

Accepted Answer

You need the foreign registration document, the bill of sale, a certificate of conformity and a quitus fiscal from the French tax office. The French carte grise is then requested online through the ANTS, and a car over four years old needs a recent contrôle technique.

Question 2

How much does the carte grise cost with a Moselle address?

Accepted Answer

The fee is the car's fiscal horsepower multiplied by the rate set by the Grand Est region, plus fixed charges. The application goes through the ANTS within a month of the purchase.

Question 3

What should I check on a car that has spent its winters in Moselle?

Accepted Answer

Road salt and cold are hard on the underbody, brake lines and exhaust, so look underneath for rust. Check the heating, battery and tyres too, and ask whether winter tyres come with the car.

Question 4

Is a German environmental badge valid in Moselle and the rest of France?

Accepted Answer

No, French low-emission zones require the Crit'Air sticker. Its class depends on the fuel and Euro emissions standard, not on where the car comes from, and it is ordered online with the registration details.
