Question 1

Why is the carte grise for a GLE so expensive?

Accepted Answer

The French carte grise is charged per fiscal horsepower at a rate each region sets, and a GLE has a high fiscal rating. Plug-in hybrid versions usually come out cheaper, since the rating also depends on CO2 emissions.

Question 2

Does an imported GLE pay the malus?

Accepted Answer

Yes. A used car registered in France for the first time pays the malus écologique, reduced according to its age, and on a GLE that can be a large sum. A GLE first registered in France has already paid it.

Question 3

Diesel or plug-in hybrid GLE?

Accepted Answer

The 300 d, 350 d and 400 d diesels suit long motorway journeys and towing; the 350 de pairs a diesel with a battery for electric driving around town. The plug-in hybrid gets the Crit'Air 1 sticker, while a diesel GLE is Crit'Air 2.

Question 4

What should I check on a GLE with air suspension?

Accepted Answer

Leave it parked overnight and look for a corner sitting lower than the others, and listen for the compressor running long after start-up. Airmatic repairs are costly, so a service record from a Mercedes-Benz workshop is worth asking for.
