Question 1

What should I check on a car kept by the sea in Charente-Maritime?

Accepted Answer

Look underneath for rust on the brake lines, exhaust, subframe and sills, and check the cabin and air filter for sand. Cars parked outdoors near the beaches of Ré, Oléron or Royan are the most exposed.

Question 2

Is a low-mileage holiday car from Charente-Maritime a good buy?

Accepted Answer

It can be, but a car used only for short summer trips rarely warms up fully and may have stood for months. Check the battery, the age of the tyres and the brake discs for rust from standing, and ask when the oil was last changed.

Question 3

Will a car from another department need new plates in Charente-Maritime?

Accepted Answer

No. A French registration number stays with the car for life, and the department number on the plate is the owner's choice. You simply apply online to the ANTS for a carte grise in your name within a month of the purchase.

Question 4

Does a seller in Charente-Maritime need a recent contrôle technique?

Accepted Answer

Yes, for a car over four years old the report must be less than six months old at the sale. If it found major defects, the follow-up inspection must be done within two months.
