Question 1

Do cars from the Calvados coast suffer from salt?

Accepted Answer

Sea air along the coast from Ouistreham to Honfleur speeds up rust on the underbody, sills, brake lines and exhaust. A look at the car on a lift, or at least under the wheel arches, says more than shiny paint.

Question 2

What does a carte grise cost in Calvados?

Accepted Answer

The regional part is a rate per fiscal horsepower set by the Normandy region, identical across the department, plus fixed national fees. The government simulator gives the exact figure from the car's fiscal horsepower.

Question 3

Which roads matter for drivers in Calvados?

Accepted Answer

The A13 motorway, tolled towards Paris, links Caen with Rouen and the capital, while the toll-free A84 runs to Rennes and the N13 dual carriageway to Bayeux and Cherbourg. Caen itself is circled by a ring road.

Question 4

Does a car bought in Calvados need a contrôle technique?

Accepted Answer

If it is over four years old, the seller must hand over a contrôle technique report less than six months old, as everywhere in France. Read the list of defects, since some require a repair and a counter-visit within two months.
