Question 1

Soft top or folding hard top on a used cabriolet?

Accepted Answer

A fabric roof is lighter and takes less boot space, but it ages with sun and car washes. A folding hard top is quieter and more secure in winter, though its pumps, sensors and latches cost more to repair when they fail.

Question 2

How do I check a used cabriolet's roof?

Accepted Answer

Have it opened and closed fully several times, listening for strain and watching for a pause mid-cycle or a warning light. Look at the seals, drain channels and carpets for signs of water, and on a soft top check the rear window for cracks or clouding.

Question 3

What paperwork comes with a used cabriolet in France?

Accepted Answer

The seller hands over the certificat d'immatriculation, known as the carte grise, and for a car over four years old a contrôle technique less than six months old. You then register the car in your name online.

Question 4

When is the best time to buy a cabriolet?

Accepted Answer

Demand usually drops in autumn and winter, which helps when negotiating. A test drive with the roof down is less pleasant then, but still worth doing.
